    Tumbulgum
It's name is an aboriginal word meaning 'meeting of the waters' as the Rous River joins the Tweed River here. It has been a busy commercial and maritime centre from the middle of the last century. The first "grog shanty" (unlicensed hotel) started trading here in 1887.

Tumbulgum was originally a cedar loggers settlement and many of the early buildings were constructed of red cedar and have been gazetted by the National Trust. These days, activity at Tumbulgum centres on the river. Hire boats are available for exploring the beautiful Rous River, one of the little known treasures of the Tweed, and bait and tackle can be had by those who fancy a lazy day's fishing. This stretch of the river is also excellent for skiing. Fuel and marine facilities are also available.

The village has a General Store and newsagency. The area's popular watering hole is the historic Tumbulgum Hotel where the food is excellent. The village also features an historic bakery and residence housing antiques and giftware. A tea room occupies part of the old home and there are also tables and chairs outdoors. The pioneers' cemetery near the village has recently been restored and is well worth a visit.

    Border Ranges National Park
It stretches 85 kilometres from east to west. Together with the McPherson Ranges, the Springbrook Plateau and the Nightcap National Park, Border Ranges National Park forms part of the caldera of the Mount Warning shield; the largest caldera in the southern hemisphere.

Border Ranges National Park appeals to naturalists, birdwatchers and geologists as well as bushwalkers with its spectacular views, pristine rainforests, waterfalls plunging into deep gorges, sparkling creeks, steep scarps and rugged ridges.

    World Heritage
Border Ranges National Park has been included on the World Heritage list as part of the Central Eastern Rainforest Reserves (Australia) along with other major rainforest stands in north-east NSW and south-east Queensland. World Heritage properties, places of outstanding value to the world, may be natural wonders or monuments and landscapes of human culture.

The listing of the Central Eastern Rainforest Reserves (Australia) means that Australia has an obligation to protect the values of this subtropical rainforest, including the plants and animals that are endemic to the area.

More than three-quarters of Border Ranges National Park is managed as wilderness. As declared wilderness, these areas are provided protection for their natural features and access is by foot only.

Picnics, lookouts and bushwalks Eastern section The eastern half, which is easily accessible to the motorist via the Tweed Range Scenic Drive, encompasses some of the best scenery in the park. The drive is 64 kilometres in length from the park's entrance tits exit. Because of the steep roads, buses and caravans must be left at Sheep Station Creek Camping Area.

Sheep Station Creek Camping Area is a popular spot that is ideal for families. For the walker, there is a network of tracks that radiate out from the rest areas. The Booyong Walk, starting at Sheep Station Creek Camping Area, connects with Forest Tops Camping Area. Other walks are the Palm Forest Walk that starts from Sheep Station Creek Camping Area, and the Rosewood Loop which branches off from the Booyong Walk about one-third of the way.

Forest Tops Camping Area is another camping area in the eastern section, situated in a grassy forest clearing. Brindle Creek Picnic Area is a picnic spot with three trails that explore the primeval rainforest. Red Cedar Loop covers 750 metres of level terrain and takes 30 minutes. Helmholtzia Loop, named for the tall lilies along Brindle Creek, is one kilometre long and takes about 30 minutes and is part of the Brindle Creek Walk, a half-day, five-kilometre walk one way to the Antarctic Beech Picnic Area.

Antarctic Beech Picnic Area has a northern outlook over Grady's Creek and the NSW-Queensland border to Lamington National Park. Explore Brindle Creek Walk and see the ancient Antarctic Beech trees.

Tweed Valley Lookout is a spectacular caldera viewpoint along the Tweed Range Scenic Drive. Pinnacle Lookout is reached by a short walk through rainforest. The view from this high point stretches across the caldera to the central plug of Mount Warning and the coast north of Tweed Heads.

Blackbutts Picnic Area situated high on the caldera rim also has panoramic views of the caldera and Mount Warning. Have a picnic surrounded by old blackbutt trees and take in the views of Mount Warning and the Tweed Valley.

Bar Mountain Picnic Area is the highest point on the caldera and is surrounded by a stand of cool temperate rainforest dominated by Antarctic Beech trees. There are three short but interesting walks at this picnic area: Beech Glade Walk (50 metres), Falcorostrum Loop Walk (750 metres) and Bar Mountain Circuit which incorporates part of the Falcorostrum Loop (3.5 kilometres).

    Central section
Access the park's central section is via Lions Road, which provides an alternative route to and from Brisbane. Lion's Road is reached by turning off the Kyogle-Woodenbong Road 22 kilometres north of Kyogle, thence to Rathdowney, which is on the Mount Lindesay Highway 24 kilometres south-west of Beaudesert.

Border Loop Picnic Area, three kilometres from Queensland, is the only picnic area maintained on Lions Road. From the lookout you can see the famous Border Loop railway. A short loop walk at the picnic area descends into sclerophyll forest where different tree species have been given name tags, making this a most informative walk.

    Western section
The western section of Border Ranges National Park is very rugged and is accessible only on foot. There are no facilities in this section, which is best suited to fit and well-equipped walkers (a map and compass are essential). Walkers should bear in mind that it is very easy to become lost in the rainforest areas.

Motorists can enjoy the spectacular skyline of this section of the park by following the Kyogle-Woodenbong Road north-west to the intersection with Woodenbong Road. The high point in the area, Mount Lindesay (1180 metres), will be seen to the north of the Kyogle-Woodenbong Road. Forest Tops Rest Area provides overnight camping facilities and an all weather cooking galley. Campers should pack a small gas or fuel stove. Sheep Station Creek Rest Area is near the park boundary and is set amongst eucalypts.

Bush camping is possible on the western edge of the Bar Mountain Rest Area.

    Cafe D'bar & Gallery
Steve Archdeacon says he believes he has gone full circle since arriving on the Tweed Coast with his family in his early teens in 1972.

Growing up in the surfing 'Glory days" of the Coolangatta surf scene, Steve was not only bumping shoulders with some of the great legends of surfing but competing against them as well. It was on the hill, many years ago, overlooking D-bah with perfect waves and only a handful of surfers out, that his dream to live and work in that very location began; a dream that would be shared by family and friends for generations to come.

Becoming a chef was the only way to be in the water all day, so it was surf by day and chef by night. The result was thirty years of industry experience, working with the best chefs on the Gold Coast to formulate a style that is always driven by change and culture.

Steve “Arch” as known by the locals and his wife Donna have re-opened cafe D’bar at the top of Point Danger creating an addictive experience offering five dining areas with an individual focus on “Culture” all created by the locals. The downstairs area offers a feeling of relaxation, you can enjoy great food, fantastic coffee while viewing the local surf photography – ALL SERVED TAKEAWAY STYLE “in case you prefer the comfort of your car on the hill.”

Or try the “Rainbow Deck” at the rear of the existing cafe, the “OLD QUEENSLANDER” has been home to many locals over the years and Steve and Donna want to see it now enjoyed by all once again. Complimenting this area is an array of Visual Delight with many varieties of local artwork and talent given by the locals “on consignment” for purpose of the experience at Cafe d’bar.

The “Chill out Lounge” upstairs of the cafe is another room where you can sit surrounded by colourful surf art and enjoy a local in/house artist while your checking out the Surf from D’bah hill to Cook Island and Fingal.

Steve and Donna's aim is to not only have a tourist destination but also create a homely feel for locals both young and old with a focus on great food, art, craft and photography & giftware.

And they have definitely succeeded!!...It has to be one of the best places on the coast to unwind, check the surf, buy a gift or just get an awesome feed and with the best coffee around.

But be warned! ........ Get too comfortable and you won’t want to get up and leave!!!!

    Cudgen
Over one hundred years ago, the now sleepy village of Cudgen was the busiest place on the Tweed River. Set amidst the rich red volcanic soils, Cudgen is now famous for its valuable farming land. Once over 500 men were employed at a sugar mill built in the 1880's and the Tweed's first church, St Marks, was built in 1882.

Now as you drive through Cudgen take the time to stroll down the Memorial Lane. This is an avenue of pines and fig trees, each one named in memory of soldiers who did not return from war. Anzac services are held here each year at the cenotaph made from the bricks of the original school and dedicated to the Cudgen veterans.

Located 12km south-west of Murwillumbah, off Kyogle road.

    Summit Track
Winding upwards from the Breakfast Creek parking area is the Mount Warning Summit Track, which passes through a variety of vegetation communities. Subtropical and temperate rainforest, wet sclerophyll forest and heath shrubland are all encountered on your journey upward. After a final rock scramble the track emerges to 360 degree views reaching every distant horizon.

Evident from this vantage point is the enormous eroded bowl of the caldera landform. Twenty million years ago the height of the volcano was twice the present height of Mount Warning. This volcano was formed by massive outpourings of lava, layer after layer, over a landscape that stretched from Mt. Tamborine in the north to Lismore in the south. Westward it extended to Kyogle and its eastern remnants occur as reefs at Point Danger.

The height of the volcano alone was sufficient to trap moisture laden air from the coast. Over the millennium the myriad of small streams produced by this trapped moisture, carved out this unique and curious landform. Harder rocks resisted this erosion such as the rhyolite cliffs of the caldera rim and the rock composition of the central chamber. These stand as stark testimony of the grandeur that once was.
    Duration: 4-5 hr return.
    Degree of difficulty: Strenuous.
Track condition: Steep and rocky in parts.
Winter warning: Not advisable to undertake the walk after 2 pm in winter, as darkness on the return can lead to people becoming lost.

    Lyrebird Track
A shorter walk catering for the less energetic, the Lyrebird Track crosses Breakfast Creek before winding some 200 m through palm forest to a platform set amongst the lush subtropical rainforest.

    Useful information

    * Toilets are available only at the start of the walk.
    * Suitable footwear should be worn.
    * Temperature drops rapidly as you ascend.
    * Carry your own refreshments.
    * Take all your litter away with you.
    * Keep to the track - short cuts cause erosion.
    * Camping and fires are not permitted.
    * Facilities for barbecues are provided at Korrumbyn Creek Picnic Area, situated 1.5 km down the road from the Breakfast Creek parking area.

Approx. 6km Murwillumbah to Mt Warning

Leaving the World Heritage Rainforest Centre in Murwillumbah head into Murwillumbah and continue to Riverview Street where you will pick up the signs to Mt Warning.

The winding course of the Tweed River takes you through lush rolling pasture land and magnificent escarpments for 15 kms to the Mt Warning turnoff and Tourist Drive No. 32.

Driving towards Mt Warning approximately half kilometre past the Mt Warning Caravan Park, on the left, BBQ facilities at Korrumbyn Creek Picnic. Mt Warning is the ancient core of the largest extinct shield volcano in the Southern Hemisphere. For most of the year, the peak of the mountain is where the sun’s first rays touch the Australian mainland and is protected as a World Heritage listed National Park.

The 4.4 km rainforest walk to the summit of Mt Warning will reward you with the view of a lifetime across the caldera of the world’s second largest volcano erosion crater.

Please allow 5 hours of daylight for the return walk to the summit, the degree of difficulty - strenuous. For the not-so-energetic explorer, the “Lyrebird Track” winds some 200 metres through a forest of towering palms to a rainforest-viewing platform and is a magical experience.

The rock archway of Natural Bridge spans the mountain-fed waters of Cave Creek. Behind the bridge, a waterfall plunges into a gaping hole and continues inside a cavern.

Natural Bridge was formed as a result of volcanic activity and erosion. It lies at the junction of one basalt layer and a softer layer of agglomerate. The agglomerate was undercut at the base of a waterfall, forming the deep cavern. At the same time, a deep pool formed from the circular motion of boulders in the stream above. The drilling action eventually broke through the roof of the cavern to create the magnificent natural attraction seen today.

    Glowworms:
The cavern is also known as home to thousands of glowworms. Glowworms are very sensitive to environmental changes and the following rules should be observed:
    * Please do not expose glowworms to cigarette smoke, fires, bright lights or insect repellants.
    * Please do not shine torches directly on the glowworms.

    Facilities:
    * 1km walking track winding through rainforest and across Cave Creek. At the base of the waterfall, a short track leads into the cavern to a viewing platform.
    * Toilets, water and electric pay barbecues
    * No rubbish bins are provided so please take all rubbish with you
    * Public telephone and petrol are available further north along the Numinbah Valley road, subject to the business's operating hours.
    * Camping is not permitted in the park.

    Caring for the Park:
    * No pets please
    * Please take your litter home with you
    * Adhere to the walking tracks
    * No fires permitted
    * Jumping into the waterhole is not permitted

There is no direct access to the Springbrook Plateau from the Natural Bridge section of the park.

    Nightcap National Park
Nightcap National Park is situated in far north-eastern New South Wales between Murwillumbah to the north-east and Lismore to the south. It encompasses 8,145 hectares of the Nightcap Range and adjoins Whian Whian State Forest.
The park is located on the southern rim of the caldera of the Mount Warning shield volcano. Basalt and rhyolite lava flows from the volcano have influenced the vegetation communities in the area.

Minyon Falls Picnic Area is situated on Minyon Drive above Minyon Falls. On clear days there are views to the ocean from the waterfall's edge. Barbecues are provided. Walking tracks
Minyon Loop (7.5 kilometre, 4 1/2 hours, moderate-hard). Beginning at either Minyon Grass or Minyon Falls picnic areas this walk takes visitors through changing vegetation to the base of the falls and along the escarpment edge. For visitors wishing to walk only to the base of Minyon Falls the walk begins at Minyon Grass and is a 4 kilometre return walk taking around 2 hours. Both walks have steep climbs out of the valley floor.

Historic Nightcap Track (16 kilometres one way, 1 1/2 days, moderate-hard). Passing through both Nightcap National Park and Whian Whian State Forest this walk can be started at either Mt Nardi or Rummery Park. The track overlaps parts of the original trail used by travellers and postal workers between Lismore and Murwillumbah in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Bush camping is permitted on this walk but visitors must use portable stoves and carry out their own rubbish.

Protestors Falls (1.4 kilometre return, 45 minutes, easy). This easy walk winds its way through Bangalow palms to the base of the falls. Swimming is not permitted in the area as it is home to the endangered Fleay's barred frog.

Mt Matheson Loop (3 kilometre, 1 1/2 hours, easy-moderate). Originating at Mt Nardi, the Mt Matheson Loop heads out through the lush rainforest encircling Mt Matheson. Drier vegetation communities are found near the cliff edges. The Pholis Gap and Historic Nightcap tracks split off from this walk.

Pholis Gap (4 kilometre return, 1 1/2 hours, moderate). The track was named after Athol Pholi who was killed by a tree fall while working in the area. Beginning at Mt Nardi the track meanders through rainforest for a kilometre before splitting off the Mt Matheson Loop and descending towards the escarpment edge. Drier vegetation dominated by grass trees and New England blackbutt typify the walk to Pholis Gap which offers views of Mt Warning and surrounding valleys.

Goorgana Track (7 kilometres one way, 1 day, hard). This walk requires visitors to be experienced in the use of map and compass. Taking up where the Pholis Gap track finishes, the track skirts westwards along the ridge line, taking in the majority of high points in the Nightcap Range.
Remnants of the Kunghur flying fox are found at the end of this walk.

Big Scrub Loop (1.5 kilometres, 45 minutes, moderate). Starting off Gibbergunyah Range Road, visitors can stroll amongst some of the best examples of remnant rainforest in NSW. See large figs, abundant bird life and crystal clear creeks.

    Location and Access
Nightcap National Park can be accessed by five separate public roads from the south of the park. All are dirt with the exception of the access to Mt Nardi.
The park is situated approximately 30 kilometres north of Lismore and 30 kilometres south-east of Murwillumbah.

    Nightcap Vista Tourist Drive
This is a lovely round trip from Murwillumbah out to Crams Farm Recreation Area at Clarrie Hall Dam and through the villages of Uki, Stokers Siding and past the new Tweed River Art Gallery.

From the World Heritage Rainforest Centre in Murwillumbah head west along Wollumbin Street over the river and turn left into Riverview Street towards Uki. Follow this road through the area of Bray Park and continue straight ahead and cross a low bridge, passing roadside fruit stalls and the Mt Warning turnoff.

A further 4km along you will pass the Stokers Siding turnoff on your left. Continue on to the village of Uki, an old cedar felling town where tea rooms, arts and crafts can be enjoyed. Continue on past the turnoff to the Clarrie Hall Dam and cross the Doon Doon Creek. A further 8km ahead turn left into Doon Doon Road at the Crams Farm Recreation Area signpost.

On the right you will pass the turnoff to Midginbil Road. After crossing a single lane bridge it is only a short distance before arriving at Crams Farm public recreation area (no dogs allowed). Enjoy a picnic or BBQ, bush walking or fish for Australian Bass. The dam has a catch and release program and a NSW freshwater fishing licence is required. Rowing and canoeing is permitted.

Return back the same way from Crams Farm, through the village of Uki and turn right at the Stokers Siding turnoff, passing the Uki Saw Mill and fruit stalls along the way. Arriving at the village of Stokers Siding, cross the railway line and then turn left where you can visit a tea house or see pottery, arts and crafts.

Further along cross another railway line and Dunbible Creek. At the “T” intersection, turn right over a white wooden bridge into Mistral Road past the Tweed River Art Gallery and continue on to Tweed Valley Way (40) just south of Murwillumbah where the drive ends.

    Nimbin Candles
Nimbin Candles derived from the need to supply a Non-Toxic, slow burning, smokeless candle, which could be burnt in confined spaces such as caravans, tents, tepees’ etc, to the local community that had expanded after the Aquarius Festival in the early eighties.

The Nimbin Candle Factory originally started off in a shed in the Blue Knob Valley, north of Nimbin. After the shed burn down in 1989, the candle factory was relocated to ‘The Old Butter Factory’ in 1990.

Nimbin Candles can now be found in many independent Grocery stores, Health Food stores and Gift shops in every State and Territory through out Australia. Nimbin Candles contain no animal products and are available through many organic and wholefood stores through out Australia as well.

Nimbin candles are made using the age-old method of dipping each individual wick continuously to create a perfect taper. We use only the highest grade paraffin wax, the same wax used in food processing such as greaseproof paper, wrapping cheeses etc… The dyes we use are vegetable dyes, the same used in batik art.
